[Design Education in India.]

A critical study examining the evolution, challenges, and future potential of design education in India as a system shaped by culture, pedagogy, and socio-economic context.

This research investigates the current state and trajectory of design education in India, situating it within the country’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy. It examines how design, despite its growing relevance, continues to remain undervalued within institutional and industrial frameworks.

The study traces the foundations of Indian design education through the India Design Reports and the establishment of institutions such as the National Institute of Design, analysing how global influences were adapted within local cultural contexts. It highlights the tension between traditional knowledge systems and contemporary design practices, questioning the loss of craft sensitivity within modern education structures.

The paper ultimately positions design education as a critical driver for cultural continuity, innovation, and national development, while emphasising the need for systemic change, greater accessibility, and stronger alignment with Indian realities.

Focusing on pedagogy, the research explores key principles such as learning through inquiry, project-based approaches, and the need for unlearning rigid educational systems. It further examines how design operates as a holistic and integrative approach, capable of addressing diverse production systems—from craft to industry.
